Dr.
Raymond L. Orbach, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Under Secretary for
Science, has named Robert C. Wunderlich as Manager of DOE’s Chicago Office.
The
Chicago Office is part of the DOE Office of Science’s (SC)
“Bob
Wunderlich is a tireless leader in working with several laboratories –
especially Argonne National Laboratory – to create superior science to benefit
the entire world. Bob’s creativity and
project management skills have furthered the achievement of our One SC goals
including ensuring safety in our work and developing a fuller sense of our
laboratories,” Orbach said.
Wunderlich
has more than 35 years of federal service in roles with increasing
responsibility. He has been a member of the Senior Executive Service since
2000. For the last three months he has
been Acting Manager of the Chicago Office. Since 2000, he has been Manager of
the DOE Argonne Site Office where he has line management responsibility and
accountability for the administration of the DOE contract with the UChicago
Argonne LLC for the management and operation of Argonne National Laboratory
(ANL). Annual funding for ANL exceeds $500 million.
Wunderlich
also has been a key participant on the OneSC Project, serving as the Deputy
Project Manager on the original Phase 1 planning and implementation team, and currently
as the M&O Procurement Management System Owner, helping lead the effort to
re-engineer several SC business systems.
In the
recent past, Wunderlich served at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and
Stanford Linear Accelerator Center site offices. Previously he served as the Federal Project
Director for the successful $800 million Advanced Photon Source Project and
received the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executives in 1994.
Wunderlich
earlier served as Deputy Project Manager for the Superconducting Super Collider
(SSC) Project Office. From 1978 to 1988,
Wunderlich worked in the Civilian Radioactive Waste Disposal Program in
