Woodridge Resident Named Manager of

U.S. Department of Energy Chicago Office

Dr. Raymond L. Orbach, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Under Secretary for Science, has named Robert C. Wunderlich as Manager of DOE’s Chicago Office.

The Chicago Office is part of the DOE Office of Science’s (SC) Integrated Support Center which is responsible for providing business, technical and administrative support to the Office of Science and its 10 Site Offices associated with SC’s national laboratories – including Argonne National Laboratory near Darien and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Batavia.  The Chicago Office is also responsible for thousands of contracts and grants with research organizations worldwide.  In total, the Chicago Office supports activities exceeding $4 billion.

“Bob Wunderlich is a tireless leader in working with several laboratories – especially Argonne National Laboratory – to create superior science to benefit the entire world.  Bob’s creativity and project management skills have furthered the achievement of our One SC goals including ensuring safety in our work and developing a fuller sense of our laboratories,” Orbach said.

Wunderlich has more than 35 years of federal service in roles with increasing responsibility. He has been a member of the Senior Executive Service since 2000.  For the last three months he has been Acting Manager of the Chicago Office. Since 2000, he has been Manager of the DOE Argonne Site Office where he has line management responsibility and accountability for the administration of the DOE contract with the UChicago Argonne LLC for the management and operation of Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). Annual funding for ANL exceeds $500 million.

Wunderlich also has been a key participant on the OneSC Project, serving as the Deputy Project Manager on the original Phase 1 planning and implementation team, and currently as the M&O Procurement Management System Owner, helping lead the effort to re-engineer several SC business systems.

In the recent past, Wunderlich served at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford Linear Accelerator Center site offices.  Previously he served as the Federal Project Director for the successful $800 million Advanced Photon Source Project and received the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executives in 1994.

Wunderlich earlier served as Deputy Project Manager for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) Project Office.  From 1978 to 1988, Wunderlich worked in the Civilian Radioactive Waste Disposal Program in Columbus, Ohio, and later in Hereford, Texas, including 4 years as the Deputy Project Manager for the Salt Repository Project Office.  Wunderlich started his career with the Atomic Energy Commission in 1973 as a Reactor Engineer in Reactor Design and Development. Wunderlich was in the US Marine Corps from 1967-1970 – serving as a rifleman with the 1st Marine Division in Viet Nam.

Wunderlich received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State in 1973 and a Masters Degree in Nuclear Engineering from Penn State in 1975.  He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Project Management Institute.

Wunderlich, a resident of Woodridge, IL, has been married to Cynthia for 37 years.  Together they have three sons and six grandchildren.
